If you have made the switch to Windows7, the latest version of the Microsoft developed operating system (OS for short), then surely you’ve noticed that the icons have changed considerably. There is an icon in the System Tray that tells you if you’re connected to the internet or not. But it’s nothing like the icon you’ve grown accustomed to seeing in Windows XP; there are no blinking blue screens. You know, the blinking blue screens that appear when you check Show icon in notification area when connected.

If you would like to bring back those blinking lights, there is a simple solution, a solution that comes in the form of a free piece of software. The software I am talking about is apptly named Network Activity Indicator for Windows. It will let you put the network activity indicator back in the System Tray in Windows 7.

“Network Activity Indicator displays the old 'two monitors' icon in Windows 7 that flashed blue to show network activity on the System Tray. Unlike the original Windows XP utility (that has individual indicators for each interface), this program indicates outgoing and incoming network packets on all available interfaces. This utility is a standalone executable. Run the program, you'll see a new system tray icon. Now you can monitor your network traffic in Windows 7 using XP-like 'two monitors' icon in the System Tray. To customize program settings right click the mouse on the System Tray icon,” says the official description of the software.

There really isn’t much else to say. Just visit this site, download the software (which weighs in at a mere 57KB), run the exe file and enjoy. You can instruct Network Activity Indicator for Windows 7 to automatically load at startup so you don’t have to run the app every time you boot up your Windows 7-powered computer.
