Microsoft has a web browser, mainly Internet Explorer; the Mozilla Foundation has the Firefox browser; Apple has a browser of its own as well, mainly Safari. Google is best known for its search engine, but it couldn’t stay out of the browser game. Precisely a year ago, in December 2008, the first stable version of the Google developed Chrome web browser was released to the public. The development process of the Chrome browser moved along at a swift pace. A year has passed since Chrome 1.0 was released and the browser has already reached version 3.0 on the stable channel and v. 4.0 on the Beta channel. Regarding the browser’s market share, in one year it rose to 3.9% worldwide, making Chrome the 4th most widely used browser on the market today.
And that market share will only go up now that Google has struck a deal with Avast, company that specializes in providing security software solutions. The deal goes something like this: Avast will bundle its free antivirus application with Google’s browser. Users that install the antivirus solution will be asked if they would like to install Google Chrome as well.
"As we get close to our launch date for our new Avast! Free Antivirus, version 5 we have an exciting new agreement with Google to announce. We will be giving our new users an option to install Google Chrome when installing Avast. We are not forcing Chrome on users. It is entirely up to the user–to download/install is entirely up to the user and nothing is hidden. Personally, I think Google Chrome is an exciting new browser,” commented Avast’s Vincent Steckler.
This is not the first time that Google bundled its browser with another company’s software application. Back in March, the current year, it came to light that RealPlayer came bundled with Google chrome. Computer uses that downloaded RealPlayer from the official site and installed it on their machine found that the option to Include Google Chrome, a faster way to browse the web was checked by default. Leaving this option checked meant the user would install Chrome on his system.
