You may have noticed that Google has changed its homepage, Google.com. The page now features a fade-in design – which means that you will only see the Google logo and the search box; when you move the mouse, all the other elements of the webpage will become visible, they will fade-in. According to the Mountain View-based search engine giant, this change will make the Google.com visitor use the homepage “even more efficiently:”“Internally, a large number of Google employees have been using the new homepage. They have come to really like it — it represents our focus on great search yet helps searchers efficiently access all of Google's products. Like the new supersized search box we launched several months ago, this change is one that is very noticeable at first, and then quickly becomes second nature,” explained VP of Search Products and User Experience, Marissa Mayer.
Google is taking this “strip it down” philosophy and applying it to other online services it owns. Like YouTube, the video sharing site that Google bought for $1.65 billion three years ago. If you want to, you can opt-in and try out (a.k.a. Beta test) a new YouTube layout called Feather that strips away all of the excess bits and pieces from the standard page layout – things like search suggestions, the option to customize embeds, rate and post comments, all other comments except for the first 10.
“The player still features prominently, but will default to standard quality. Related videos, comments and other familiar features from the current watch page are kept to a minimum. All of this results in a user experience that aims to keep things simple and the videos loading and playing quickly. If we see adoption go up along with improvements in latency, we'll look to roll this out of TestTube and make it more widely available,” commented the YouTube team.
